Before you start reading this, be aware it’s a long and winding tale that eventually shows you how important buying life insurance is. Enjoy.

I have lived in 6 different countries for over two years in each country and visited 80 as a tourist. That’s a lot of travel over the past 44 years.

The last major city I spent a week in was Istanbul. I stayed in the old city, next to one of the most iconic spice markets in the world, The Historic Egyptian Bazaar. 15 million people live in Istanbul and about 50,000 people a day visit the bazaar. It’s a vibrant, crazy, beautiful place, to say the least. In all my travels, Istanbul is the most special city I have ever visited.

I came back to Canada and shortly after that we were told to stay home, wash our hands, and wear masks. That was quite a transition both mentally and physically.

After being isolated for 90 days with a great deal of introspection, I stumbled upon an inconvenient feeling. Let’s call it a hunch. I think this whole situation is a dress rehearsal for something much more sporty that’s coming down the road.

A sense of urgency to get out of the city and away from people became very clear to me. The country was calling. Its siren song was intoxicating.

I had to make sure two things occurred before I could answer her call. One, how would my business survive, and two where can I get land. The situation has made the first step very easy. We are all now Zoom experts and non-face to face business is the norm. I love it. I don’t have to wine and dine people, go to events and waste time and money on people that really are not interested in buying life insurance or doing business with me.

Two, I needed to find land that fulfilled my isolationist dreams. After an extensive search, I found 80 acres of pristine forest land with a river and zero humans nearby. Bordered on two sides by conservation land and the other two sides are massive plots of uninhabited land. I was set.

The exit happened and I have never been happier.

I have checked out of the city. Most people will stay where they are. That holds true for most businesses, and life insurance is no different. Through this whole situation, life insurance companies have continued to insure Canadians. In fact, the life insurance companies have become better companies and more customer friendly.

Customers have access to larger policies without having to do blood and urine tests. So too, customers can use e-signatures as opposed to wet signatures. The whole industry has leapt out of the dark ages and into the 21st century. I am really impressed and heartened by the insurance industry’s progress.
